A Game of Missed Opportunities
Both teams got off to a shaky start in Super Bowl 46 and despite getting dominated throughout the first 30 minutes, the Patriots held a 10-9 halftime lead. It seemed to me that the Giants might have missed out on their chance to jump out big on the Patriots and that Bill Belichick's group was going to hit their stride and extend the lead in the 2nd half.
After getting their lead up to 8, the Patriots were the ones that missed out on opportunities in the 2nd half with plenty of dropped balls (one by the always sure-handed Wes Welker) and the Giants did their part in taking advantage. Believe it or not, the unit that surprised everyone yesterday was the Patriots defense. They absolutely exceeded everyones expectations after getting bashed for two weeks and they held the Giants to just two offensive touchdowns. It was the mighty Patriot offense that sputtered throughout the game and in turn, cost them a championship. A lot of this has to do with the hype surrounding the game, but I am not sure it lived up to many people's expectations. The 4th quarter was exciting, but it seemed both teams took forever to get settled in.
Now that football is officially over, it is time as a sports fan to devote all your attention to college and high school basketball. There are plenty of compelling college basketball matchups this week, most of which you can listen to on 630 The Fan. High School Basketball in the Treasure Valley is nearing tournament time where we will eventually crown some more State Champions.
Here is a quick recap of what happened in the 5A SIC over the weekend. The Borah Lions clinched the outright conference title by beating Rocky Mountain and now have two games to rest up and get healthy before the district tournament. Centennial got back on track by beating Capital and because of Mountain View losing to Eagle, the Patriots and Mavericks are tied again in 2nd place with just two games remaining. (Mountain View holds the tiebreaker) Boise barely beat Meridian over the weekend and it is looking like Jeff Ulrickson's team will be the #5 seed in the District Tournament. Finally, Vallivue kept on rolling as they beat Timberline over the weekend all but securing the Falcons spot in the District Tournament.
