A Lot Riding on the Final Day of the Regular Season
The game that has the most meaning involves Vallivue and Meridian. Neither team is officially in the District Tournament, but both are in control of their own destiny if they can get the win. If Vallivue wins, they will clinch the #7 seed and more importantly, avoid playing Borah in the 1st round of the District Tournament. If the Falcons lose, they would need Rocky Mountain to lose as well, or Vallivue's season could be over by virtue of being the odd team out on a three-way tiebreaker. For Meridian, they could honor their seniors in a big way if they can come up with the victory and punch a ticket to District's. If they lose, they would need the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies to lose as well because Meridian does hold the tiebreaker if it came down to that. Nonetheless, it should be a fantastic atmosphere for High School Basketball and I will be attending the game as a fan to take it all in.
Rocky Mountain had a chance to sew up their bid to the District Tournament on Tuesday against Meridian and now need to win tonight at Mountain View to make it in. The Grizzlies lost a two point game to Meridian and have definitely made it tougher on themselves considering Mountain View just got Tanner Percifield back which gives them another weapon. The scheduling worked out well for Rocky due to the fact that Meridian is playing Vallivue tonight and no matter what, one of them has to lose.
Now that we have the two games out of the way that still involve teams trying to make the District Tournament, there are two important games tonight that will go a long way in determining the seeding for the games starting next Tuesday. Centennial plays at Timberline in a game where both teams are trying to play their best basketball going into the District Tournament. The only way Centennial moves out of the #3 spot is if they win AND Mountain View loses as the Mavericks hold the tiebreaker. For Timberline, they are guaranteed the #4 or #5 seed and will be on the same side as the Borah Lions, so they are the one team that does not have too much to play for other than the fact they want to enter the District Tournament on a high note.
Eagle will make the dreaded trip to Boise High with the chance to extend their winning streak to 3 games and possibly the #4 seed. A loss by the Mustangs will guarantee them the #6 seed as they would not have the tiebreaker with either Boise or Timberline. For the Braves, there are a few scenarios. Due to the fact that Timberline swept the season series with Boise, every scenario for Boise with seeding depends on what Timberline does against scenario. The short answer is if Boise wins tonight, they will be either the #4 or #5 seed. With a loss, they will be guaranteed the #6 seed.
The final game of the night has no bearing on the regular season standings. The Borah Lions will try and get every player on their bench into the game tonight as they host the last-place Capital Eagles. Barring the upset of the season, Borah will ride into the District Tournament on a 17 game winning streak and teams around the rest of the state are starting to realize that Borah is the team to beat.
Tune into the show tomorrow from 4-6 PM for a full recap of the games as well as a District Tournament Preview.
