Eagle Stays AliveFebruary 23, 2012, 12:42 pm Eagle had a chance to punch their ticket to the State Tournament on Wednesday when team leader, Braiden Shaw missed two free throws to extend the game and eventually Centennial won. Last night, he had a chance to redeem himself and boy did he ever. The Mustangs held the lead the whole game before Boise High took a 3 point advantage in the final minute. Connor Kent made a layup and following a missed free throw by the Braves, Eagle had a chance to take the lead back. Shaw then missed a jumper and while the ball was loose, he was fouled with 5.8 seconds remaining and was sent to the free throw line to shoot a one-and-one. With thoughts surely swirling through his head from the night before, he calmly sunk both free throws to keep the Mustang's season alive by winning 40-39. On three consecutive games, Eagle has played an overtime game which they lost, a double overtime game in which they lost and then last night's one point victory. They will now travel to Burley High School on Saturday to play Skyline, who lost in triple overtime to Highland in their District Championship, for the final spot in the 5A State Tournament. The 4A is in the spotlight tonight as they will crown their District Champion when Kuna and Skyview will battle it out at 8 PM. Before that game starts, Bishop Kelly will play Caldwell for 3rd place and the winner will go to a play-in game on Saturday as well. Both games will take place at Middleton High School. Remember that the 5A SIC District Championship is tomorrow night and we will start our coverage at 7:00 PM as the Borah Lions will put their 19 game winning streak on the line against the defending State Champion, Mountain View Mavericks.

Top 40 ShowcaseMay 15, 2012, 1:45 pm There is a plethora of pitchers on the Treasure Valley team which features the ace of staff from five different teams in the SIC. Among a few of the pitchers will be Rocky's Richie Kyro, Eagle's Brandon Brown, Timberline's Cody Price, Capital's Shawn Powers and Vallivue's Shane Doke. Two pitchers from 4A Skyview will be on the squad as well a hidden gem in Mountain Home's Alex Rodriguez. The two catchers are so talented offensively and defensively in Fruitland's Daulton Blackwell and Rocky's Luke Holloway and they both have handled solid pitching staffs all year long. At first base, Rocky's Stephan Zanoni has not had the best year offensively but still finds his spot on this years team and Skyview's Gunner Pancheri will play there as well. The middle infield is absolutely stacked with Rocky Mountain's Isaac Anderson and Eagle's Skyler Souza. Anderson is heading into the State Tournament leading the Grizzlies with a .491 batting average and Souza has been a vacuum at shortstop this year. Lastly, the outfield features four players from the 5A SIC that have had stellar seasons. Rocky's Mason Smith and Blake Thoren made the squad along with Capital's Logan Staudt who had a breakout season hitting nearly .500 and the lone sophomore on the Treasure Valley team, Mountain View's Branson Trube who is hitting over .400 and might be the fastest player in the SIC. Tune into the show today for a breakdown of the rosters as well as more State Tournament talk from 4-6 PM on 630 The Fan.

A Game for the AgesFebruary 22, 2012, 2:23 pm Eagle had the lead for the majority of the game and seemed in control behind a big 2nd half from Jon Satchwell, who had 13 second half points. Momentum quickly shifted and Centennial found themselves with a three point lead in the final ten seconds of regulation. After the Patriots missed the front end of a one and one, the Mustangs drove down the floor with no timeouts remaining and Satchwell was there to save the day and knock in the game-tying three pointer to send the game into overtime. In the first extra session, both teams struggled to score offensively and Eagle's Braiden Shaw had a chance to win the game with 5 seconds left if he could knock down one free throw. Shaw, who is a 52% free throw shooter, missed them both as everyone in the ThunderDome was holding their breath and the game was then sent to a 2nd overtime. So after both teams felt they had a legitimate chance to win the game, Centennial finally stopped letting Eagle hang around and put them away in the 2nd overtime to clinch their spot in the State Tournament. Eagle will have to turn around quickly and win tonight against Boise High to have a chance to make it into the State Tournament. In the 1st game of the night, the Timberline Wolves beat their arch rival, Boise High, to complete a season sweep and send the Wolves back to the State Tournament by winning 56-46. Jackson Reed had a monster game as he scored 21 points and had 8 rebounds. For Boise, they will also have to have a short term memory as they will have to beat Eagle tonight to extend their season. Up North, the Post Falls Trojans defeated the Coeur D'Alene Vikings 47-41 to win their district championship and more importantly, locked up a berth in the State Tournament next week. By gaining the #1 seed, the Trojans will play Centennial in the 1st round, setting up a big time showdown. The Vikings will have to beat Lake City on Friday to earn their spot in the State Tournament. In the 4A, Bishop Kelly and Caldwell survived and they will play each other for the consolation championship tomorrow night with the winner headed to a play-in game on Saturday. In the Snake River Valley Conference, the Fruitland Grizzlies avenged two earlier losses to Weiser and grabbed their 10th consecutive District Championship and locked in their spot in the State Tournament. You can listen to the Boise vs. Eagle game tonight with coverage starting at 7:00.

Elimination Day for 5A and 4A Boys BasketballFebruary 21, 2012, 1:33 pm Two big time rivalries will take place at Eagle High School tonight when the Timberline Wolves try and beat the Boise Braves for the third time this season. The Braves are looking to clinch their 1st State Tournament berth in 15 years and will need someone other than Joe Simpson to score if they want to make that dream a reality. Simpson had 20 points against Mountain View on Saturday, but ultimately his team came up short in a 7 point loss to the defending State Champions. For Timberline, they have already had to fight off elimination as they defeated Vallivue 61-53 on Saturday behind a balanced scoring effort as 4 Wolves were in double figures. The second matchup of the night will be between two longtime friends leading their respective teams on the floor. Tom Aipperspach and the Centennial Patriots look to win their 2nd straight game with the season on the line against the Tom Seifert and the Eagle Mustangs who just about beat Borah over the weekend. Centennial responded very well against Meridian as they held the Warriors to just 32 points and Landon Kissinger came back to the forefront scoring-wise as he led all scores with 16. For Eagle, the balanced scoring has been there throughout their last few games and it will need to continue tonight against the Patriots. These two split the regular season meetings and Eagle playing on their home floor could definitely be an X-factor. In the 4A, the two hottest teams coming into the District Tournament will fight for their seasons when Middleton plays Caldwell. The Vikings could not stop Kuna's Tyler Dubowsky over the weekend as he scored 28 points in a 57-50 victory for the Kavemen. Caldwell was able to end Mountain Home's season and will need another solid effort tonight if they want to do the same to Middleton. The other matchup is a shocker to everyone because the #1 seed Bishop Kelly Knights surprisingly have to win three consecutive games to make it into the State Tournament after getting beat by Skyview over the weekend 52-51. First up for the Knights will be Columbia who on paper, seems overmatched in this contest. Follow us on twitter @630thefan for live updates from the two 5A games tonight at Eagle High School and tune into the show tomorrow for a full recap of all the games.
