Who Rose to the Occasion?
After the initial disappointment that nearly everyone in attendance had after learning that Fruitland's Joe Martarano and Rocky Mountain's Bryce Feist would not be playing in the Top 40 Showcase, the day itself turned out to be full of surprise performances from unlikely sources.
Although I thought many players fared well on Saturday, I am going to highlight a few that really stood out above the rest and got not only my attention, but the attention of college scouts in attendance as well.
Mountain View's Branson Trube stole the show on Saturday winning my MVP award. When talking about playing at the next level whether its college or beyond, the term "five-tool" player is used and Trube displayed all five tools on Saturday. He proved that he could hit for average as he batted 4-8 from the leadoff role for the Treasure Valley team as well as hitting for power as he stroked a double off of the wall in deep center field, with a wood bat no less. We already know he has ridiculous speed as he was only thrown out stealing once this season and his arm was on full display as well. If you aren't familiar with his name, you might want to because you will be hearing it often throughout his next two years at Mountain View.
As far as the "Pitcher of the Day" award it was shared between two sophomores in Bishop Kelly's Bowen Ogata and Bonneville's Lincoln Clayton. Despite these two having complete opposite body builds, they both were throwing in the upper 80's on the radar gun which was surprising because they both threw late in Game 2.
Honorable Mention honors for Rocky's Mason Smith who had three hits including an impressive triple in Game 1, Eagle's Spencer Gothberg who collected three hits, Vallivue's Shane Doke who started off Game 1 with two perfect innings on the mound, Highland's Bo Burrup who had two huge hits in Game 1, Idaho Fall's Zach Reeder with the day's only home run hit high over the left field fence at Wigle Field and Bear Lake's Tyrel Andersen who impressed defensively and hit a ball off of the wall.
