Let the BCS Bashing Begin
After the TCU loss, I thought it was a long shot for Boise State to make it into a BCS game and going into Championship Saturday, there were a bunch of things that needed to happen for the Broncos to sneak in the back door.
With all of this being said, Houston lost AND TCU did not make the top 16. What seemed like a long shot at the beginning of the day finally happened and all signs pointed to the Broncos making it to the Sugar Bowl, but that did not happen. Let me get this out there first. I am not upset they were left out of the BCS because they did not win their conference. What I am still trying to figure out is how the Sugar Bowl decided to pick Virginia Tech over the Broncos and Kansas State.
There is a saying that you need to leave a lasting impression on your final game of the year. Well, the Hokies did the exact opposite. Coming into the ACC Championship, they were a seven point favorite over a Clemson squad that had looked terrible the last three games. Despite that, the Hokies were outclassed in every aspect of the game and lost 38-10.
I think the reason behind the Sugar Bowl selecting Virginia Tech over BSU and Kansas State is fairly obvious: for money. The committee felt that Virginia Tech would travel better to New Orleans and they would bring more money in than the other two options would, which is completely wrong. To me, this needs to be the beginning of the end of the BCS determining who plays in five bowl games. If college football wants to keep the system for selecting #1 vs. #2, so be it, but to just put a pool of teams out there for bowl games to pick is ludicrous.
Again, I am not upset that Boise State got left out of the BCS. The team that the Sugar Bowl selected ahead of the Broncos is what I have a problem with and in turn, it created a terrible matchup. Take the Cotton Bowl as a prime example. The Cotton Bowl between #6 Arkansas and #8 Kansas State is a much better game than TWO of the BCS Bowls. If only #7 Boise State was as lucky to face a quality team. Their reward for a fantastic season will be to take on 6-6 Arizona State in the MAACO Las Vegas Bowl.
